Upon arrival we were amazed by the interior of the hotel. It was decorated with bamboo stalks which were planted in a garden in the center of the 1st basement floor shoot up through the open ceiling, reaching up to the 1st floor lobby. The roof above the garden is made of glass, allowing natural light to pour in and creating sharp contrasts. The space is lit up at night, creating a different atmosphere.

We were then shown to the check-in desk and also given some detox water which is also available at all times from the front desk in the lobby. Guests can also enjoy numerous other services that are available in the lobby, including the Heavenly Aroom of the Mieuxs Selection of essential oils made in Kyoto, and several varieties of Kyoto nail polish made from paints used in Japanese paintings.

After the check-in process was complete we were kindly escorted to our room. The hotel features 144 guest rooms located on level 1 to 5. All rooms are compact, and yet packed with the Japanese sense of aesthetics, being furnished with Simmons beds and Nishijin brocade headboards. Standard rooms have raised tatami-floor areas by the windows where guests can relax, while suite rooms have double sinks and large bathtubs, allowing guests to relax in comfort. We stayed in a superior king room which the interior design was inspired by the Gion District of Kyoto which is popular for its traditional machiya wooden houses, teahouses, temples and shrines. The room featured Wi-Fi, Kyoto’s Tsujiri Tea, Espresso machine, Mini bar, Cinq Mondes Bath amenities, Bathrobe & Nightwear, Tatami mat sitting area, 55-inch LED television and more!

The hotel restaurant; 54th Station Grill is designed in the image of Sanjo-ohashi Bridge at the western end of the Tokaido Highway. Here guests can enjoy buffet-style breakfasts, and grilled Wagyu or seafood unique to Kyoto prepared using “kaiseki” cuisine methods for lunch and dinner. We had the buffet breakfast here which featured a mix of healthy Japanese and Western dishes that were said to be targeting women and made using local ingredients combined with Western cooking methods. Dishes included cooked salmon, pickled japanese vegatables, croissants, an egg station, and All the dishes tasted extremely fresh and they also had fresh juices, tea and coffee available at breakfast.

For lunch and dinner, both an a la carte menu and course meals are available centered on Wagyu (Omi beef, Saga beef and Kobe beef), which has also been attracting attention from overseas in recent years, with seafood and other dishes made from generous amounts of fresh locally grown vegetables and herbs.

The hotel also features a bar called 1867, which is named after the year of samurai general returned own authorities to the emperor meaning end of samurai era. The bar has been designed in a classical style to reflect the concept behind the entire hotel of “traveling through time.” Here guests can enjoy whiskeys and an original menu of signature cocktails, made from Japanese spirits, based on consultation with world-renowned bartender, Michael Callahan. We tried a variety of cocktails during our stay including Kyoto Yura Gin & Tonic, Yura Sour, Houji Tea Espresso Martini, Kyoto Margarita and the Cafe Negroni. All were exceptional and made with extremely fresh ingredients.

All the staff were very attentive, polite and friendly and really made us feel very welcome at the hotel. It was the best hotel in Kyoto for the location, food & drink and service and we will definitely be back.
