FLYING BAMBOO YOGA

FLYING BAMBOO YOGA

If you’re looking for something exciting and active with breathtaking views, Bamboo Yoga is just what you may have been looking for. Bamboo Yoga is a combination of Aerial yoga and Bamboo tripods on the beach.

Aerial yoga is not only just a fun workout but also a very calming practice that is designed to reset the nervous system, and relax deeply held tensions in both the body and mind for a fully. It helps to move more freely, with less effort, by counteracting gravity. Suspension in the air releases tension on the bones and muscles, increasing flexibility and strengthening the core.

Bamboo Yoga was founded by Aleksandra Milewicz, a certified international yoga teacher who is based in Hong Kong. She got the idea to practice aerial yoga on bamboo tripods after she completed her aerial yoga teacher training and wanted to take her practice outside of the studio into the beautiful nature. Bamboo was the perfect material to build tripods as it is extremely strong and light.

Bamboo yoga enthusiasts can join either a full or half day workshop in Hong Kong. A full day which is great for beginners starts with an aerial yoga class at Yoga Bam Bam in Central where you learn the basics of aerial including 5-7 inversion poses. This was a great way to kick-off the morning and the aerial basics class definitely helped to make everyone much more confident before heading off to the beach. During this session, Aleks and her assistant also came around as we were all doing the poses to ensure we were doing it correctly and to help us elevate them.

After an amazing hour of aerial yoga, we all headed down to MANA where we got to know each other better and indulged in some earthy goodness before heading off to Sai Kung. Upon reaching Sai Kung we hiked up to Tai Long Wan which is the most beautiful beach I’ve seen in Hong Kong to fly on the bamboo tripods over the sea. (Those who are more advanced in aerial yoga can join in the half day workshop at the beach)

Aleks and her assistants set up the bamboo tripods with the aerial silks on the beach and we did various warm-up stretching exercises to get ourselves ready to fly. Her team were all very encouraging, experienced and helpful when it came to us doing the poses over water and even showed us some more advanced poses there we could try out on the Bamboo.

Practicing above water is not as scary as it sounds and this is definitely suitable for beginners. The bamboo tripods are extremely strong and once you are up there, your fears disappear as you transition from pose to pose.

This had been one of the best Sundays I had experienced in Hong Kong in a while. Aerial Yoga is a great experience and the views of the breathtaking beach and elegant poses make for amazing photos! It’s also great to benefit your strength and flexibility and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to try out something new or who just wants to enjoy a great day out!
