Staycation: Soho House, Mumbai

Soho House is a hotel in Mumbai. Here the Rajasthani design fuses with Art Deco touches inside of the hotel which includes private members club’s as a first Asia outpost. The 38-room hotel and clubhouse sit in the heart of Mumbai’s entertainment district, inside an 11-story building on Juhu Beach, facing the Arabian Sea.

The country has a manor vibe of a Millennial titled Scion is very much in evidence especially in the 38-bedrooms with their deep armchairs, and textured sisal rugs and patterned wallpaper and familiar Cowshed toiletries, though Indian aesthetics are subtly incorporated by way of cane furniture, cement tiles, vibrant splashes of Rajasthani block printed fabrics, vintage mirrors, lampshades covered with antique sari fabrics, and local antiques and artwork by the likes of Subodh Gupta.

On the ground floor of the hotel you have a public lounge and bar, alongside an outpost of Cecconi’s; a gym, steam rooms and juice bar on the first, screening room on the second, five floors of bedrooms, private members floor dressed with antique teak floors and cut-glass chandeliers; library on the 9th, and the 10th-floor rooftop that’s capped by the swimming pool, a Soho House staple.

There are 38 rooms, each individually designed – think Soho House chic with a hearty dash of Indian luxury. They’re kitted out with wicker furniture, lampshades made from antique saris, colourful traditional cement tiles, as well as Marshall speakers, a Roberts radio playing BBC3 when you come in (nice touch), a cocktail set with crystal glasses and silver tins of tea, coffee and, most importantly, homemade chocolate chip cookies. The bathroom shelves groan with Cowshed products (including a full set of bath stuff in the shower, so you can switch shampoo with your mood). Many of the rooms have balconies with glorious views over the Arabian sea, the skyscrapers of South Bombay hazy in the distance.

There’s also an impressive gym, with floor-to-ceiling windows, all the latest Technogym kit and permanently pumping beats to get you in the over-achieving zone. Next door is a fitness studio for classes (HIIT, boxing, Pilates) and an outdoor terrace offering candlelit yoga – the sounds of traffic below and the roar of planes above melt into nothingness as you zen out.
