Doan Fayet is a Parisian Hairdresser and Colourist based in Hong Kong. With over 17 years of experience, Doan has studied in Paris, in two renowned French hair dressing schools and has since worked internationally before arriving to Hong Kong in 2012.
Doan started out with a career in fashion before putting in on a halt and returning to Vietnam for a year. It was when he was getting his hair cut in Vietnam that he asked the hairdresser if he could style it himself. The hairdresser then observed him, realised that Doan had a natural talent and pushed him to go back to France to study hairdressing.
Recently, Doan is located at TRIBE, a private, by-appointment only hair salon in the heart of Central. When I first met Doan, he took the time to consult with me on what I wanted, and asked about my lifestyle, did I tie my hair up a lot, do I like it with more volume, which way do I part my hair/style it etc. so he could give me the best recommendations of what he thought would suit me. All these questions made me feel extremely comfortable in putting my hair in his hands. Doan suggested we refresh my layers and go brighter for summer to frame my face. After being shown to my chair the process began.
Doan started off with cutting my hair using a dry-cutting technique (the hair is not wet/washed before hand). He explained to me how this way, I could really see what my hair length and style would look like.
Next, he bleached my hair to ensure that it would lighten as I have naturally dark brown hair. After that, it was time for the balayage, which is where the colour gets added in. Balayage is a more natural, blended, sun-kissed colour. It showcases a softer effect and requires less maintenance than traditional highlights. It is extremely important to go with someone you trust, or very experienced like Doan, when doing Balayage as you don’t want it to look like stripes!
I sat back and watched as Doan carefully hand-selected which sections would have lightener applied to them to frame my face and to create a more dimensional look. After my hair was all balayaged, and wrapped up in saran-wrap to contain the heat, I sat back with a dryer which was used to expedite the lightening process. Doan kept coming by to check up on me and to check on how my hair was reacting to make sure the strands don't over-lighten. It was then time for a rinse and hair wash which was extremely relaxing. Doan then mixed a toner to apply to help blend my natural base and new highlights together and achieve the overall tone he had envisioned.
A few hours later, I felt like a transformed person. Doan went out of his way to create a new, refreshing look for me that would not only frame my face but also make me look a lot more youthful and fresh! His service was impeccable, making me feel relaxed the whole process and keeping me informed as we went along.
